The product was sold at an average price of 65,000 guaraníes per 20-kilogram bag, representing a significant injection of resources for small farmers in the area and a concrete boost to the department’s economy.
The institute notes that crops are advancing rapidly and could affect regional production.
Potato production this year, during the winter and summer seasons, reached a total of 1.6 million tons, a 15% increase compared to 2024, according to a report from the Ministry of Rural Development and Lands.
Its main objective is to improve small and medium-sized producers’ access to regional markets with quality agricultural products, with an emphasis on potato and corn crops, pillars of national food security.
Alfredo Pereyra, president of the Argentine Federation of Potato Producers, explained the difficult situation facing the sector, with low prices and high costs.
More than 25 producers from the San Francisco de Mosca district in the province of Ambo managed to export five tons of native potatoes to the American company Alcampo Foods, at a price of S/3.50 per kilo, almost double the conventional price.
This is a sustained effort: "We seek to reduce dependence on seeds from the north of the country and strengthen regional production capacity with varieties adapted to the extreme climatic conditions of the southern hemisphere."
