Peru (Cayna in Ambo): Hailstorms cause a devastating scenario in potato crops and other agricultural productions.
This was reported by the district mayor, Antonio Ochoa Malpartida, who expressed his concern about the magnitude of the phenomenon.
The district of Cayna, located in the province of Ambo, has been affected again by an intense hailstorm that caused serious damage in several agricultural areas, with a special impact on the hamlet of Estanco, the populated center of Quio and nearby areas.
The weather event lasted for several hours, leaving farmland covered in a white layer of ice. Staple crops intended for local consumption, as well as native and yellow potato crops, were severely affected. The ice remained on the fields for more than 24 hours, causing total crop loss and a significant economic impact on local farmers.

In total, it is estimated that more than 45 hectares of crops were completely damaged.
Mayor Ochoa made an urgent appeal to the Regional Directorate of Agriculture and the Regional Government of Huánuco to provide immediate support to the affected farmers. He emphasized that the Agricultural Insurance program is insufficient to address the consequences of this disaster and urged the provision of direct aid through the supply of seeds, fungicides, fertilizers, and humanitarian assistance. The uncertainty surrounding how to secure their food supply has left many families in a critical situation.
This incident reinforces the growing evidence of the impact of climate change in the region and highlights the vulnerability of farmers to increasingly extreme natural phenomena, which threaten food security and local economic sustainability.
