Peru: Huánuco managed to export 60 tons of native potatoes to the United States in 2025.
Huánuco exported sixty tons of native potatoes to the United States in 2025, confirmed the Regional Government, considering that this tuber has consolidated itself as one of the emblematic products of regional agriculture with added value.
The regional entity reported that the outstanding performance in the department’s trade balance was achieved thanks to the Native Potato Project, carried out by the Regional Directorate of Agriculture.
This program’s main objective is to strengthen local production and guarantee fair prices for farmers. This progress was made possible through collaboration between the Regional Government, the beneficiary producers, and strategic partners in the private sector, such as Alcampo Food and Alcampo Perú, which purchased the tubers for processing and subsequent export as a frozen product, the institution explained.

Governor Antonio Pulgar emphasized the benefits of the project to the rural economy, noting that it is a clear example of how well-coordinated development policies with farmers and technical institutions can transform the countryside.
He also assured that they will continue promoting these production chains to benefit more families in Huánuco. Producers like Enrique Reyes, from the district of Yarumayo, and Adrián Huaranga, from Churubamba, reported that they can now sell native potatoes to the aforementioned companies for S/3.50 per kilo, which is almost double the S/1.80 they obtained in the conventional market.
“Before, prices were very low, but now, thanks to the project, we have access to better markets and fairer prices,” Huaranga commented. Called “Improvement of Agricultural Services in the Native Potato Production Chain in 6 Provinces of the Huánuco Department,” the project involves a total investment of 37,729,753.33 soles, according to the Investment Monitoring System of the Ministry of Economy and Finance.
It is scheduled to be completed by January 31, 2028, and shows a cumulative financial progress of 32.6%, with a remaining balance of 25,441,234.51 soles pending execution. In total, there are 4,616 beneficiary producers distributed across 139 communities in 37 districts belonging to the provinces of Yarowilca, Dos de Mayo, Ambo, Huánuco, Pachitea, and Huamalíes.
While one of the project’s most significant achievements has been the marketing of native potatoes for processing and export, some shortcomings have also been identified, such as delays in the delivery of seeds and fertilizers. The beneficiaries hope that these difficulties will not recur during the remainder of the program.
