Alemania: Potato harvest 2025 in Bavaria under favorable conditions

Bavarian Farmers Association and potato producers’ associations expect slightly above-average harvest with good qualities

Bavaria’s potato crops developed under stable to good conditions in 2025. The Bavarian Farmers’ Association and Bayerische Kartoffel, the marketing initiative of Bavarian potato growers, therefore expect a slightly above-average harvest.

"Planting this year was generally somewhat earlier than last year, and the majority of crops survived the heatwave in June well," reported Hermann Greif, President of the BBV (German Agricultural Federation), at a joint potato harvest press event at a farm belonging to the Plattling Producers’ Association in Haidlfing. The cool, wet weather in July further contributed to healthy growth, and the increasing dryness in August led to ripening – favorable conditions for potatoes. This is reflected in the crops, which promise good quality this year. However, Greif warns: "With the increasing spread of the Stolbur and SBR diseases via the reed glasswing leafhopper, Bavarian producers of potatoes, sugar beets, and vegetables, as well as grain and rapeseed, face an enormous challenge. Stolbur threatens the mainstays of arable farming and the entire value chain. Comprehensive, coordinated control and prevention measures are needed."

Consumers are happy: Increasing cultivation areas and quantities are pushing down prices

2024 was a difficult growing year, with late frosts, heavy rainfall, and regional flooding leading to only moderate harvests for farms – resulting in correspondingly higher prices. "2025 will bring very good quality and higher volumes. This is pushing down prices," explains Konrad Zollner, Chairman of the Bavarian State Association of Producer Groups for Quality Potatoes. According to current statistics, potato cultivation in Bavaria has also been expanded again to approximately 40,000 hectares, representing a return to established acreage levels. Consumers now have the opportunity to purchase the best quality at reasonable prices. By doing so locally from their regional producers, they increase the added value for the farms, even at low prices.
