Peru (Huánuco): Native potato producers receive training in in vitro seed production

148 farmers learned about successful cultivation and marketing experiences. The project seeks to preserve biodiversity and strengthen the local economy.

Between May 7 and 10, 148 native potato producers from the Huánuco region participated in an internship organized by the Papa Nativa project , an initiative of the Regional Directorate of Agriculture . During their visit to Junín and Huancavelica , the farmers received technical talks on the use of in vitro seeds, as well as successful experiences in the cultivation and marketing of this tuber.

Project supervisor Josué Zevallos Melgar highlighted the importance of this internship, which brought together producers from six provinces and 37 districts of Huánuco . "The farmers are satisfied with the experience, which has greatly helped them improve their knowledge of native potato management," Zevallos stated.

In vitro seeds and new production techniques

One of the key topics of the internship was in vitro seed processing, a technique that produces smaller, more resistant tubers, making them easier to transport to hard-to-reach areas. The training focused on obtaining small tubers from stem cells at the Santana station in Junín .

“The main objective is to offer a seed that is more resistant to diseases and adverse climatic factors. Small tubers are not only easier to transport, but they also maintain the same yield as traditional tubers,” Zevallos explained. The technique also allows for improved genetics in potato varieties, which benefits both production and the nutritional quality of the crop.

Potato varieties and market opportunities

Huánuco producers also learned about several native potato varieties grown in Junín and Huancavelica , some of which could be introduced to their region. Among the most notable are Cacho de Toro, Sumaxongo, and Camotillo, varieties with high market value due to their nutritional and aesthetic characteristics.

In total, experts affirm that there are more than 520 native potato varieties in the areas visited, some of which are unknown in Huánuco. However, more than 1,000 varieties are cultivated in the Huánuco region, positioning it as one of the main producers of native potatoes in the country.

Infrastructure and future of the project

As part of the project, in vitro laboratories and collection centers are planned for the Huánuco region. These spaces will allow producers to replicate the experiences acquired during the internship and obtain higher-quality, more resistant seeds.

The infrastructure budget, which includes six laboratories and six greenhouses, amounts to almost 10 million soles. According to Zevallos, the first results of this effort are already visible. "We are already beginning to harvest the first quality seeds, which will be distributed to farmers," he stated.

The project has a two-year horizon, although it is expected to continue long-term with the support of the authorities and the political will of future governments. "This is a medium-term project, but with continuity, since the foundation has been laid and the farmers are committed to the process," the supervisor concluded.
