CEE: Strong demand, tight stocks drive premium potato prices in Ireland, domestic market buoyant in Europe
The Irish potato market is maintaining a steady trajectory, with consistent demand in both retail and foodservice sectors, according to the latest potato market report from the Irish Farmers Association (IFA).
The colder weather conditions in the last week have boosted consumption and the food service sector continues to ramp up in the lead up to the festive period, according to the IFA. There were increased orders this week and the pressure on price has softened. There are reports that there is good demand for chipping potatoes in the past two weeks. Irish stocks are now running tight and commanding a premium price.
Across Europe, the domestic market is reported to be buoyant, with buyers looking for best quality. Price increases of £10 to £20p.t. have been quoted for best quality. Exporters report good demand, especially for the Canaries where demand is “better with some buyers than with others”. Prices are holding at recent levels.
