Guatemala (San Pedro Carchá): They are promoting potato cultivation in the village of Peña Blanca
During the process, learning plots were established that allowed farming families to learn and apply each stage of the cultivation process, from land preparation to harvesting.
In the community of Peña Blanca, located in the municipality of San Pedro Carchá, Alta Verapaz, members of the Rural Development Learning Centers (CADER) achieved a successful potato harvest. This accomplishment is the result of a hands-on educational process carried out with the support of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA), through the Department of Horticulture and the Vice-Ministry of Rural Economic Development (VIDER).
During this project, learning plots were established where farming families could understand and apply each stage of cultivation, from soil preparation to harvesting. Additionally, they received technical assistance and agricultural supplies designed to strengthen their production skills and optimize crop yields.
These initiatives directly contribute to improving the food and nutritional security of participating families, as potatoes are an essential food in their daily diet. Furthermore, given their high demand in the national market, potatoes represent a concrete opportunity to increase the income of small-scale farmers.
In total, 25 families belonging to the CADERs positively valued the support provided, highlighting that the practical training and the introduction of modern techniques have boosted both their productivity and their family economy.
With this type of support, MAGA reaffirms its commitment to promoting training programs in rural areas, aimed at community development and the sustainable strengthening of local agricultural production.
