Mexico: Producers predict an increase in demand for potato chips by 2026.
The president of the National Confederation of Potato Producers said that they have come from two very bad years with low sales and prices
The president of the National Confederation of Potato Producers, Gildardo González Saldívar, stated that, due to various events in the country such as the World Cup, there will be an increase in sales of all foods, including potato snacks, which could help them recover after two difficult years.
He mentioned that the drop in sales and prices in 2024 and 2025 for fresh potatoes and snacks seriously affected them, because production costs are high and they were unable to make a profit, and he hopes to close this year with positive numbers in marketing.
“It could be a significant increase, and we are projecting it that way, anticipating a future scenario in the coming months of enthusiasm and increased consumption. Prices will always fluctuate based on supply and demand; this year we expect better circumstances.”
He stated that sales from the World Cup and other entertainment events will not only revive potato sales , but also increase traffic to restaurants and tourist sites, and all of this contributes to greater food consumption.
He recalled that, due to the drop in snack sales, the industry made adjustments to the annual increase it gives to producers, but it did not cover the inflation level, and they were unable to achieve the optimal return on investment in their business.
