Spain: Potato prices fall by 60% and producers are hesitant to harvest them
In the last session of the León Exchange, the Agria variety potato was quoted at 120 euros/ton, compared to 320 at the end of 2023.
A reduction in prices exceeding 60 percent has been labeled as "worrying" by the Lonja. This situation has made farmers hesitant to gather their crops because they do not have assurance of a better price through a contract with the industry. The reasons mentioned include a high supply of potatoes across Europe and imports from new producing nations at very low rates. This has caused a 57 percent decrease in the price received at the source for this vegetable compared to last year. The steep price decline of over 60 percent, which the Lonja calls "concerning," has disheartened farmers from collecting their produce, as they do not have the security of a more just price through an industrial agreement. Additionally, high production costs make the situation worse.
