Peru: Promoting the Designation of Origin for local potatoes to strengthen exports

The national tuber is gaining ground in international markets and is considering formalizing its differentiation.

Exports from the Peruvian potato production chain continue their upward trend in the global market, solidifying the country’s position as a leader in the production and marketing of this iconic tuber. According to market analyst Heber Chávez, between January and September 2025, 2,675.4 tons were exported, representing a 22.4% increase compared to the same period of the previous year.

This increase reflects the strong international acceptance of Peruvian potatoes, especially native varieties, recognized for their unique flavor profile and authentic characteristics. Chávez emphasizes that implementing a value-added strategy centered on the Designation of Origin would allow the positive trend to continue and position Peruvian potatoes in premium and gourmet markets.

“The Designation of Origin would promote the recognition and formalization of small producers in the different regions of the country, facilitating access to competitive prices and new export markets. Furthermore, it would provide a key competitive advantage for native potatoes worldwide,” the analyst argues.

During the period analyzed, Peruvian potatoes achieved a presence in 22 international markets. However, the main destination remains Bolivia, accounting for 68.4% of exports, followed by the United States with 14.1%, and other countries that make up 17.5%. This market diversification, although still in its early stages, opens new opportunities for the sector.

A total of 76 companies participated in the shipments, with Yeslu EIRL leading the exported volume, followed by Inversiones Degan & RK SAC. The most demanded presentations abroad include fresh potatoes, dried potatoes, frozen potatoes and other variants.

According to Heber Chávez, potato production is concentrated in regions such as Huánuco, Cajamarca, Cusco, Puno, Junín, Lima, Ica and Huancavelica, where small and medium producers maintain genetic diversity and employ ancestral techniques that guarantee the quality of the product.

Given this scenario, Peru has a unique opportunity to strengthen the international recognition of its native potatoes, consolidating its leadership in the global market for differentiated foods and nutraceuticals.
