Mexico (Northern Sinaloa): They estimate a reduction in the area planted with potatoes

Potato cultivation will have a reduced area compared to 2024, and they estimate that it may exceed 14,000 hectares compared to 17,000 last year, which is positive in order not to affect marketing, said Jorge Benjamín López Rosas.

The president of the Potato Producers Association in Los Mochis mentioned that to date they have planted around 6,500 hectares, but they still have all of November and December, according to the planting period recommended by the technicians to obtain better results.

“Each farmer is doing their calculations and knows how much land to plant and what they are going to plant. Fortunately, as we know, the cultivation of grains, the cultivation of corn, is more established so that it can be planted because of water issues. This will mean that the producer who opted to go to potatoes because he could not plant corn, well, he will do it.”

He explained that the reduction is due to the fact that there is now a little more water for the fall-winter cycle and more land was authorized for corn, while last year they faced restrictions and grain producers turned to potatoes  , but they overdid it and that caused complications in the sale of the food and they did not do well economically.

He highlighted that the rains that occurred in October generated moisture in the soil, which was used by many  producers  to save on initial irrigation and have the opportunity to cultivate more land.

The potato is a crop that is established only in the northern municipalities of  Sinaloa , it has a medium water demand, it requires an initial irrigation and although apparently many aids are given because they can reach seven, there is no excess use of the water resource because state-of-the-art technology is used through which the plant is only wetted when the climatic condition demands it.
