Spain: Potatoes are once again the main attraction at Coristanco

The potato is the quintessential crop of Coristanco. And for another year, now 43, the Potato Festival will celebrate the tuber as the town’s symbol of identity, with two days packed with activities highlighting the excellence and quality of this crop in the area. These characteristics are precisely the distinguishing factors of this product produced in this Coruña municipality. "The market recognizes the characteristics of our potato. It generates economy, culture, and pride for our municipality," acknowledges Coristanco Mayor Juan Carlos García. This year’s event will show visitors how the product is grown in Coristanco.

The fair expects to attract more than 5,000 attendees for a series of activities, food competitions, photography exhibitions, and musical performances. "The municipality’s children and adults are involved in the various activities. If there’s one thing that defines Coristanco, it’s the dryland potato, and the Kennebec variety in particular, and these days are special for everyone," says García. The Pataca Fair brings together agriculture, gastronomy, and traditions surrounding the tuber.

I AGROPROFESSIONAL MEETING OF THE POTATO

As a new development, the 1st Coristanco Potato Agricultural and Professional Meeting is being held. This is an essential event for farmers, technicians, researchers, and all professionals interested in this traditional Galician crop with great future potential. This initiative seeks to boost and professionalize the potato sector in the region. It will include an agronomic market analysis and will highlight potato cultivation and the main objective: to demonstrate the quality and recognition of the Coristanco potato brand to consumers. "This meeting is a unique opportunity to meet, address issues of interest to the entire potato sector, and learn about new challenges. This event will provide an overview of what’s happening and where the sector is headed," says the mayor of Coristanco.
