Costa Rica: National potato production is suffering and at risk of disappearing
The Costa Rican Chamber of Potato Producers warned that if imports continue without protective measures, the national sector could disappear within two years.

This is due to the danger of pests and diseases in the product, as well as competition.
According to the organization, this situation would directly affect nearly 1,100 farming families. The union’s representatives emphasized that potatoes are one of the world’s leading crops, both in terms of their planting area and nutritional value.
Martín González, former president of the National Horticultural Corporation, explained the sector’s prospects.
González expanded on this issue affecting the paper sector.
The sector insisted that public policies and trade measures are needed to protect domestic production, promote competitiveness, and prevent farmers from being displaced by lower-priced imported products.
