France: A producer in Gigny-Bussy gives away 500 tons of potatoes due to his inability to sell them.

It’s a mountain of potatoes that has become an unexpected symbol of rural generosity and the fight against food waste.

During these August days, the scene is unusual: cars, vans, and trailers parade along a country road, stopping in front of a monumental pile of tubers, and visitors fill bags, sacks, and even entire trunks. “Potatoes aren’t cheap,” explains Christophe, 68, as he fills his car with the help of his family. “If you can get them for free, why not?”

According to the mayor of Gigny-Bussy, Pascale Chevallot, the farmer, who owns land in the Aube and grows crops in the Marne, couldn’t find a commercial outlet for these tons of still-edible potatoes. To free up space in his warehouses for the upcoming new harvest, he decided to offer the 500 tons of potatoes to the population. "Then they will be scattered around the countryside," the mayor added.

The news spread quickly, attracting needy neighbors, curious visitors, and shopkeepers alike. Dylan, a resident of Saint-Dizier, recalls how two years ago he collected 600 kilos of hay to store with straw in his basement.
