Poland: Potato area in 2025. How many hectares did farmers plant this year?

The potato market in Poland has changed significantly in recent years . It’s worth noting that many farmers who hadn’t previously cultivated potatoes have established new plantations. This was, of course, motivated by the relatively high prices of the commodity recorded in previous seasons. Potatoes , given the difficulties associated with growing grains and corn due to their low profitability, seemed like a viable solution.

The area has increased significantly, and as a result, growers have begun to encounter problems. Potato cultivation is not easy, especially due to high disease pressure and agronomic considerations. The availability of high-quality seed potatoes has also become a significant challenge. This year, the area under potato cultivation has increased even more, while availability is higher, demand is insufficient, and prices remain low.

How does all this translate into crop area ? In 2020, according to the Agency for Restructuring and Modernization of Agriculture (ARiMR), the area designated for potato cultivation was 185,767.99 hectares. The following year (2021) proved to be quite a surprise. The area increased significantly, reaching 203,796.26 hectares. However, this peak was soon followed by a significant decline.

This occurred in 2022, when the crop area decreased to 181,597.03 hectares . Despite a slight increase in the following season, the situation remained very similar. In 2023, potatoes were grown on 182,213.79 hectares. Subsequently, domestic potato producers decided to increase the crop area .

The area reached 192,482.13 hectares in 2024. It’s no secret that many producers were hoping for a good price for their produce, which also encouraged new growers.

A further increase in the potato crop area occurred in 2025. This area is estimated to reach 211,140.45 hectares . It should be emphasized, however, that these data are based on declarations from producers themselves, submitted in applications for direct payments to the Agency for Restructuring and Modernization of Agriculture. Applications are still being accepted, and farmers have the opportunity to make corrections. What does this mean? The crop area may change, but these changes are not expected to be significant.
