Peru (Huánuco): The Amarilis commune promotes sustainable agriculture with "Papa Power"

The Amarilis commune presented the highly anticipated "Papa Power" Potato Festival, a 100% organic product harvested in the heart of the Shismay town.

This local effort has resulted in 60 tons of native potato, with more than 70 varieties, all grown using the best agroecological practices, thanks to the implementation of the Field School.

FAMILIES UNITED FOR THE SAME CAUSE

Papa Power highlights the unity of diverse producing families. In the coming months, four commercial varieties of potatoes, purple corn, and white potatoes will be added to the cultivation of organic potatoes, further strengthening local agriculture and offering fresh and healthy products to the population.

"This project is not only an economic driver, but also reflects the district’s commitment to agroecological development and food security. With the implementation of the Field School, we have enabled our farmers, like never before, to produce quality organic potatoes, positioning Amarilis as a benchmark for agricultural production," said Economic Development Manager Víctor Arévalo.

For his part, Luis Artica, director of the Institute for Development and Environment (IDMA), stated: “We are committed to promoting sustainable agriculture, and this project has been a great example of what can be achieved when we work together. The Field School has been key to transferring knowledge about agroecological techniques to the 14 producing families, benefiting both them and the entire community,” he added.

This joint effort between the municipality of Amarilis, the IDMA (National Agricultural Development Institute), and the Regional Directorate of Agriculture (DRA) has resulted in the establishment of a one-hectare demonstration plot for native potato production using agroecological techniques, for a period of two years. It is worth noting that, at the end of September 2024, the district municipality delivered two tons of native potato seeds to producers, promoting the start of production.

Starting today, Wednesday, April 9, the first cultivated native potatoes will be harvested, and these organic potatoes will be distributed at Amarilis’ green points and the Real Plaza Shopping Center from April 11 to 13. This project is just the beginning of an agricultural revolution that will bring the quality and flavor of Amarilis’ native potatoes to more homes and markets.
