Spain: Extra-early and early potato plantings increase by almost 4% to over 17,700 hectares.

The planting of "extra-early" and "early" potatoes in Spain will increase by almost 4% in 2025, exceeding 17,700 hectares, according to the latest data provided by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.

Extra-early potatoes

As already mentioned, the area planted with extra-early varieties has increased by 4.5% this season, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAPA), reaching 2,212 hectares. Initial production estimates are at 55,951 tons, a 4.5% increase over the previous figures of 53,556 tons.

The Canary Islands are the region with the largest number of hectares dedicated to this type of production, with 892 hectares in 2025, a 2.7% drop from the previous figure of 917 hectares. Production is expected to fall by 11.4%, from 23,260 tons to the current 20,600.

As for Andalusia, farmers in that region are said to have dedicated 779 hectares to this type of variety in the current campaign, a 1.5% decrease from 791 hectares. Production, on the other hand, is said to have seen a slight increase of 0.5%, reaching 20,525 tons, compared to a previous figure of €20,420.

Finally, we should highlight the area dedicated to these crops in Murcia, which totals 370 hectares, a 19.4% increase compared to the previous figure of 310 hectares. Potato harvest in this area is projected to reach 11,840 tons, representing a 46.9% increase compared to the previous figure of 8,060 hectares.

Early potatoes

15,530 hectares of early potato varieties would have been planted in Spain in the current 2025 campaign, according to data provided by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, increasing this statistic by 3.2% compared to the previous year, when it was 13,105 hectares.

Andalusia is the region with the largest area dedicated to this type of potato this campaign, with 5,019 hectares, growing 0.7% from the initial 4,983. Seville is the leading province in this sector, with 3,700 hectares, approximately 100 more than the previous campaign.

Murcia occupies second place in this ranking with 3,200 hectares, representing a 3.2% increase over the previous 3,100 hectares.

The Autonomous Community of Valencia is in third place with a regional surface area of ​​1,562 hectares, according to MAPA statistics, a 7.4% increase compared to 1,454 hectares in the previous year. The province of Valencia has the largest area dedicated to these tubers, with 992 hectares, 47 more than in 2024.

Galicia has 1,267 hectares dedicated to "early" potato varieties, representing a significant increase of 20.4% compared to the previous 1,052 hectares. Pontevedra has allocated 649 hectares to this crop in the current campaign, an increase of more than 20% compared to the initial 510 hectares.

We conclude this analysis of the planting of these tubers with the Balearic Islands, which saw its surface area decrease by 10%, from 600 hectares to the current 540.
