Canadá: Government announces support program for New Brunswick potato growers impacted by excessive moisture
In a decisive move to support local agriculture, the Government of Canada, in partnership with the New Brunswick provincial government, has announced the launch of the 2023 Canada-New Brunswick Potato AgriRecovery Initiative, according
This program aims to provide much-needed financial assistance to potato producers who faced extraordinary costs due to excessive moisture during last year’s growing season. Starting this November, eligible farmers will be able to access this support to help mitigate the impact of the challenging weather conditions.
A Critical Support Framework
The AgriRecovery initiative is part of a broader disaster relief framework designed to assist agricultural producers in overcoming the financial burdens caused by unforeseen disasters. Under this program, the funding will be cost-shared, with the federal government covering 60% and the provincial government 40%, as detailed under the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership.
With a total funding commitment of up to $25 million, the initiative will assist potato producers with expenses related to growing, harvesting, storing, or disposing of last year’s potato crop. This significant investment underscores the commitment of both levels of government to the resilience of New Brunswick’s potato industry, which plays a vital role in the province’s economy.
Ministerial Support for Farmers
“The potato farmers in New Brunswick work tirelessly to produce their crops, but excessive moisture last year had a direct impact on their operations,” stated the Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food.
“This joint AgriRecovery initiative will provide targeted support to the sector, helping farmers get back on their feet so they can keep producing the top-quality products they’re known for.”
Addressing Industry Challenges
The summer of 2023 marked one of the wettest seasons on record, posing significant challenges for potato growers across New Brunswick. The financial ramifications of this excessive moisture were profound, prompting calls from the industry for government assistance.
Margaret Johnson, Minister of Agriculture, Aquaculture and Fisheries, emphasized the importance of this initiative, saying, “The financial impact on New Brunswick potato growers was significant. The new AgriRecovery initiative for potato growers will provide much-needed help. This is an important response to what the industry has asked for and a critical step in ensuring the sector is able to remain resilient.”
Preparing for Implementation
As the November rollout approaches, producers are encouraged to prepare their applications and engage with the appropriate governmental departments to access this essential support. The AgriRecovery initiative not only aims to alleviate immediate financial stress but also reinforces the long-term viability of the potato industry in New Brunswick, ensuring that these vital producers can continue to thrive in an increasingly challenging agricultural landscape.
