Potato producers are warning of the ridiculously low prices of processing potatoes on the market. However, these prices do not apply to the vast majority of potatoes processed by the agri-food industry.
The Dutch Inspection Service (NAK) is concerned about how to deal with the threat of Stolbur in seed potatoes. The French fry potato sector is also preparing for the arrival of the crop disease, which has already caused significant damage in Germany.
Potato growers fear a price collapse. According to some forecasts, 8.5 million tonnes of potatoes could be harvested this year, 2025.
"This is the worst year since 2001, and certainly the worst year of my career," says one farmer.
