Nicaragua: The price of potatoes registers a significant increase.
Currently, due to water scarcity and lack of rain in the mountains, the price of potatoes has increased.
The price of potatoes has increased again this week at the Alfredo Lazo market in Estelí. A pound, which used to sell for between 25 and 28 córdobas, has now reached 40 córdobas, according to vendor Antonio Arróliga Dávila.
Arróliga explained that this increase is due to the rise in the price of a quintal of the product, which went from a range of 2,000 to 2,200 córdobas to one between 3,400 and 3,500 córdobas this week.
Currently, due to the lack of water and the scarce rainfall in the mountains, the price of potatoes has risen. A quintal now sells for between 3,400 and 3,500 córdobas. Previously, it was 2,000 córdobas, and a pound sold for between 25 and 28 córdobas, the merchant explained.
Arróliga also pointed out that the increase affects retailers, as many customers have reduced their purchases due to the high cost of the product.
It affects us because consumers are buying less than usual. If a customer used to buy 10 pounds, now they might only buy two because of the price, he commented.
ABC News also consulted a local agronomist who advises producers in the region, who explained that the price increase is linked to delays in planting in places like Miraflor and to the decrease in production in the lowlands of Estelí.
The specialist added that the lack of rain has affected natural irrigation and the recharge of aquifers and reservoirs used by producers for pumped irrigation systems, thus impacting the availability of the crop and its price in the markets.
