Peru (Yunguyo): Intense hailstorm affected potato crops in Chimbo

Hailstorms up to 20 cm deep affected potato crops in Cuturapi, and authorities are assessing the damage to activate support measures.

The sub-prefect of Yunguyo, Mary Carmen Mamani Ruelas, reported that early Wednesday morning, between 2:30 a.m. and 3:40 a.m., an intense hailstorm damaged potato crops in the town of Chimbo, which belongs to the district of Cuturapi in the province of Yunguyo. According to initial reports, several hectares were damaged by the hail, which reached a thickness of 15 to 20 cm.

He noted that the deputy governors are very distressed, and from the early hours they sent reports to the Agrarian Agency and the Defense Platform. Representatives from these entities have already traveled to the area to assess the damage caused by this weather event.

He noted that although local officials attempted to stop the hailstorm with rockets, they were unsuccessful, resulting in damage to potato crops, known locally as aynocas. The town of Inicati in the Challapampa area was also affected. The hailstorm is expected to continue throughout the week, and rapid response teams have already provided foliar fertilizer to those affected.
