Dominican Republic: Koreans demonstrate new alternatives for potato cultivation

Korean cooperation in the Dominican Republic and the Dominican Institute of Agricultural and Forestry Research (IDIAF) presented sustainable technological alternatives to increase productivity and reduce potato production costs.

During the seminar held at the Constanza Horticultural Producers Association, which was attended by more than 60 producers and technicians, producers were presented with technological alternatives, including a methodology for producing quality, disease-free seed potatoes and the presentation of preliminary results for a new, highly productive potato variety from Ecuador.

Potato production in the country is concentrated in Constanza, with 80% of the crop grown, and 20% in the central (Baní and San José de Ocoa) and southwestern (San Juan de la Maguana) agricultural regions. According to official figures, 44,790 tareas are planted in the country, with a production of 1.8 million quintals for domestic consumption. The seeds used by producers come from Canada, the United States of America, the Netherlands, and Germany.

The Korean Agricultural Cooperation Agency (KCA) in the country is sponsoring a project that seeks to improve potato crop productivity by introducing varieties and disseminating sustainable seed production techniques that contribute to reducing production costs and increasing productivity and income for the country’s potato producers.

The seminar was attended by Dr. Yongbum Kim, director of the Kopia Center in the Dominican Republic, and authorities from Constanza.
