Health: Potatoes may treat ulcers better than drugs.

A Russian study reveals that a natural compound in potatoes promotes gastric mucosal regeneration more effectively than drugs such as omeprazole and ranitidine, while also reducing the risk of relapse.

A multidisciplinary team of Russian scientists has confirmed what traditional medicine already suspected: the polysaccharides found in potatoes (Solanum tuberosum L.) have healing properties superior to some commercial drugs in the treatment of peptic ulcers and gastritis. The results, recently published in the journal Pharmaceuticals, highlight not only their ability to regenerate tissue, but also their immunomodulatory effect, key to preventing relapses.

Proven effectiveness compared to conventional medications

The study, conducted in laboratory rats, showed that potato polysaccharides (PPS) achieved ulcer healing in 60% to 80% of cases, far surpassing the results of ranitidine (25%) and omeprazole (50%). Furthermore, unlike these drugs, treatment with PPS prevented the formation of thick scar tissue, a critical factor in reducing disease recurrence.

"The absence of necrotic and cystic masses during treatment with STP suggests a significant advantage over traditional medications, also reducing the risk of complications such as gastric cancer associated with chronic tissue damage," the researchers explained.

Immune reinforcement and accelerated regeneration

Scientists have discovered that polysaccharides stimulate the production of anti-inflammatory cytokines, activating natural defense mechanisms and accelerating gastric mucosal repair. This immunomodulatory effect not only promotes healing but also offers more stable results with regular consumption.

A global health problem

Peptic ulcers affect between 5% and 10% of the world’s population, with a 25% increase in incidence since 1990. Despite pharmacological advances, up to 30% of patients suffer relapses after conventional treatment, according to the study.

A natural alternative? Although experts emphasize the need for continued medical follow-up, the findings reinforce the potato’s potential as an adjuvant in the management of these conditions. "Science validates what popular wisdom already suspected: some natural remedies, integrated into responsible treatment, can be great allies for health," the team emphasized.

As human clinical research continues, the message is clear: prevention and the use of accessible resources, such as potatoes, could make a difference in the fight against gastric diseases.
