Senegal is anticipating exceptional potato production for the 2025 crop year. On April 8, the Minister of Industry and Trade, Serigne Guèye Diop, announced an expected harvest of 240,000 tonnes. This volume would mark a historic peak for the Senegalese potato industry.
Exceptional Production AheadSenegal is preparing for an unprecedented potato harvest next year. According to Minister Serigne Guèye Diop, this production is expected to reach 240,000 tonnes. This quantity represents a significant milestone for the country’s agricultural sector.
If this forecast materializes, the Dakar potato industry could record a considerable production surplus. This surplus is estimated at around 90,000 tonnes. Indeed, demand on the Senegalese domestic market is estimated at 150,000 tonnes.
Data from the National Agency for Statistics and Demography (ANSD) underscore the exceptional nature of this forecast. The figures indicate that potato production in Dakar has never previously exceeded 200,000 tonnes. Between 2018 and 2023, average annual production stood at 146,200 tonnes.
Potatoes occupy a significant place in Senegal’s agricultural landscape. They are the second most important vegetable crop in the country. Onions top this ranking of vegetables grown in Dakar.
