Huánuco has more than 300 varieties of potatoes, including tumbay, yellow, huayro, zumaque soncco, cacho de toro and cantina sugar, which stand out for their quality and high demand in the market.

The Regional Directorate of Agriculture (DRA) of Huánuco commemorated the National Week of the Peruvian Cause, an initiative of the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri) which, through Ministerial Resolution No. 54-2025, established the fourth week of February as the date to celebrate this emblematic dish.
As part of this commemoration, the DRA held an exhibition of the various varieties of potatoes produced in the department, as well as a tasting of more than 200 stuffed causes, with the aim of promoting potato consumption, improving their marketing and avoiding the seasonal oversupply that affects agricultural producers.
The regional director of Agriculture, Yarushel Valenzuela Segura, emphasized that this initiative strengthens the promotion of potato consumption, reaffirming Huánuco’s leadership in the production of this food, along with regions such as Cusco and Puno. "We produce almost 800 thousand metric tons of potatoes per year," he said.
