Brazil: Rains in the South raise wholesale potato prices
Supply should be higher next week.

This week (17-21/02), the average price of special Agata potatoes was R$ 65/25 kg bag in the wholesale trade in São Paulo (SP), an increase of 22.3% compared to the previous week; R$ 57/sc in Belo Horizonte (MG), an increase of 14.4%, and R$ 56/sc in Rio de Janeiro (RJ), an increase of 17.7%.
The increase in prices is due to the rains at the beginning of the week in Guarapuava (PR) and Água Doce (SC), which hampered the harvest and reduced supply.
As of Wednesday (19), the rains ceased and field activities resumed at a faster pace.
The most affected wholesale centre was the one in São Paulo, which normally receives a lot of potatoes from the southern markets. The other centres sell more potatoes from Minas Gerais and Chapada Diamantina (BA), which supply normally.
Therefore, next week, if it does not rain, the number of tubers may be higher.
