This initiative, led by the regional director of Agriculture, Yarushel Valenzuela Segura, seeks to guarantee farmers access to seeds of high genetic quality and to strengthen food security and improve agricultural productivity in Huánuco.
The project uses in vitro seedlings of the Amarilla Tumbay, Canchán and Yungay varieties, provided by the National Institute of Agrarian Innovation (Inia) of Huancayo. After a 35-day acclimatization process, transplantation in trays and cultivation in a greenhouse, the plants show favorable development.
According to the director of the Marañón Agricultural Agency, Graciano López Núñez,
He explained that the project works with 300 seedlings per variety, with a projection of 10 tubers per plant, which will allow obtaining 9,000 tubers, equivalent to half a hectare of cultivation and an estimated production of 15 thousand kilos. On a larger scale, it is expected to reach a production of up to 30 thousand kilos per hectare.
In addition to guaranteeing certified seeds for cashew producers, the Regional Directorate of Agriculture plans to create three new seedbeds in partnership with farmers’ associations, with the aim of strengthening the potato value chain and improving the productivity of the sector.
This project is part of the plan for agricultural innovation, sustainability and development of family farming, promoting the use of improved technologies to optimize food production in the department.
