Armenia: Potato prices in Armenia increased by 71.4% year-on-year
The average monthly consumption of potatoes per capita in Armenia is 3,2 kg. In February 2022, potato prices increased by 71.4% year-on-year.
The situation has been affected by the growing demand, as people prefer to consume more potatoes at the expense of other products. It is worrying that potato production has declined sharply over the past four years.
In 2021, the gross potato harvest amounted to 364,600 tons, which is 12,2% less than in 2018. In 2021, compared to 2018, potato plantings decreased by 9%. If in 2018 they received 187,3 cents of potatoes per hectare, then in 2021 - 179.3 cents.
The increase in exports also had a significant impact on the price of potatoes. In 2021, 48,300 tons of potatoes were exported from Armenia (mainly to Russia), which is about 4.5 times more than in 2020.
