This initiative aligns with the strategic objectives of the Tenerife Island Potato Plan, which aims to strengthen the marketing and visibility of the agricultural sector on the island. The Tenerife Island Council, through its Department of Primary Sector, is promoting the consumption of local white potatoes through a campaign, under the slogan "Make Your World Spin," which will run during August and the first half of September, coinciding with the harvest.
The Councillor for the Primary Sector, Valentín González, emphasizes that the purpose of this campaign is to create an emotional link between the consumer and the local product, highlighting the daily effort behind each potato from Tenerife in the face of the challenges of external competition.
This action aligns with the strategic priorities of the Tenerife Island Potato Plan, a document developed through consensus among industry stakeholders and agricultural organizations. It addresses the challenges facing the island’s third most important crop, after grapes and bananas, whose production is primarily destined for the domestic market.
Valentín González emphasizes that this initiative reflects the Cabildo’s commitment to farmers, given that the sector faces difficulties such as high production costs, complex price competition with imported potatoes, problems due to drought and the presence of pests.
To address this situation, the Island Plan is structured around six strategic axes: improving competitiveness, developing new marketing strategies, promoting the social economy, increasing the production of healthy potatoes, protecting agroecosystems and biodiversity, and promoting self-sufficiency.
