Spain (Salamanca): Uncertainty just days before the start of the potato harvest
This year, uncertainty encompasses everything, both in production and price.
The potato harvest will begin next week, although picking has already started in some small plots. This year there is uncertainty in all aspects, both in production, where the Encinas area shows better prospects than Cantalpino, and in prices.
Regarding prices, this year plantings in certain parts of Andalusia were delayed, with some varieties sown at the same time as in Salamanca. This means that the harvests will coincide, likely also with that of Toledo, which will increase competition.
Despite this, the harvest in Salamanca is not expected to become widespread until well into August. Furthermore, surplus potatoes from France continue to flood the market. Potato prices are lower than in previous years, influenced by the varying quality of potatoes from the south, which are affected by different planting dates.
Currently, prices for farmers in Andalusia range from 17 to 30 cents per kilo. In Salamanca, there are no significant health problems with potatoes, although there are differences between plots.
