Venezuela: Potatoes and tomatoes are among the products most affected by smuggling.

Agricultural producers from various states across the country have warned about the negative impact that product smuggling has on national production.

Farmers in regions such as Mérida, Táchira, Trujillo, Lara, and Carabobo have pointed out how this practice directly affects their crops. Andrés Ramírez, president of the Producers Association of the Miranda municipality in Mérida, stated that this situation causes them significant losses when trying to sell their produce within the country.

Among the products most affected by smuggling are potatoes, carrots, tomatoes, onions, and fruits, Ramírez explained. He also emphasized that this problem impacts the agricultural economy, decreasing the value of food harvested in the fields.

As an example, he mentioned that a 50-kilo sack of potatoes currently sells for between $15 and $18, while the production costs for that same sack range between $33 and $35.

Finally, Ramírez stressed the urgent need for producers to have access to financing through the private banking system or support from the State to strengthen and sustain agricultural production in the country.
