Spain: The Spanish potato sector faces the challenge of a less volatile 2026

An orderly 2026 campaign must start from a joint diagnosis and lead to commitments from all links in the chain.

The Spanish potato sector is seeking stability by 2026 through dialogue among all stakeholders, following a 2025 season marked by low yields and volatility. Although the planted area increased by 10% in 2025, production fell by 2% due to weather factors, with prospects for adjusting the planted area and the need to improve consumption.

Diagnosis of the 2025 Campaign: Despite an increase in area (66,700 hectares), total production fell by 2%, with drops of close to 9% in early and mid-season varieties.

Meteorological Factors: Intense rains delayed planting, especially in Galicia and Andalusia, while the heat at the end of June caused vegetative growth to stop.

Regional Situation: Galicia was the most affected by the weather, while Castile and León increased its supply despite late plantings. For the first time, late-season potatoes outsold mid-season potatoes.

Outlook 2026: The aim is to avoid volatility through dialogue and joint commitments. An adjustment in cultivated area is anticipated, and the challenge of a declining consumption trend is being addressed.

International Context (NEPG): In France, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands, production reached 27.2 million tons in 2025 (10.4% more), generating high competition and lower prices in the free market
