France: Potato storage production will reach a record high in 2025

The 2025/2026 campaign "marks a turning point for the French potato sector," the CNIPT said in a press release.

Areas dedicated to storage have continued their strong progression: +25% since 2023 and +15% compared to 2024, reaching 197,338 hectares according to UNPT-CNIPT estimates.

"The on-the-ground survey conducted in November by the UNPT on behalf of the CNIPT, in which a representative panel of 450 producers participated, confirms the direct effect of this expansion: French production is expected to reach 8,581,205 tons, 14.7% more than in 2024. This historically high volume (which is added to the additional production of other countries) largely explains the economic pressure currently being exerted on French and European markets, for both fresh and industrial products.

This increase in production is based almost exclusively on an increase in planted area, encouraged by signals from various European industry players. In total, an additional one million tons could have been harvested in France during the 2025/2026 season.

In terms of yield, the 2025 harvest is expected to reach an average of 43.5 t/ha across France, and 45 t/ha in the UNPT/CNIPT panel areas (Picardy, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, Champagne-Ardenne, Centre-de-France, and Upper Normandy). These levels, stable compared to 2024, are in line with the ten-year average. Thus, the persistent stagnation of yields contrasts with the continuous increase in planted area, the only real source of production growth. This trend raises questions about the sector’s ability to maintain or improve its performance in an increasingly uncertain climate and regulatory environment.
