Mexico: Imports of US potatoes affect Mexican producers

Los Mochis, Sinaloa. Potato imports are affecting the placement of the local harvest, and the population can easily identify the local food in supermarkets, which stands out for its good quality, even in its presentation, being light in color, while those that arrive from the United States are dark, stated the president of the Potato Producers Association in Los Mochis, Jorge Benjamín López Rosa.

He mentioned that the entry of the product cannot be stopped because there is free trade that allows it; what is being prevented is the arrival of seeds, since the United States has phytosanitary problems and their fight is to prevent the contamination of materials in Mexico.

“American potatoes continue to enter the country for consumption, not for seed, but they continue to enter. If you go to the supermarkets, you will find American potatoes; they are not the best quality, and we have always said so. We continue fighting to prevent this from affecting us; what we would like more than anything is for us to be self-sufficient in our potato production in Mexico.”
