Netherlands: Arable farming sector tightens measures against Phytophthora
The arable farming sector is further tightening the measures against the potato disease Phytophthora infestans.

The main measures are aimed at prevention with stricter requirements in the cultivation regulations and strengthening of resistance management. The stakes are high: maintaining a profitable cultivation for both conventional and organic growers with sustainable Phytophthora control.
Potato cultivation in the Netherlands is under great pressure due to the serious Phytophthora outbreaks in 2023 and 2024. Research and practical demonstrations showed that the oomycete Phytophthora infestans developed new resistances and virulences in these years. This jeopardizes the limited package of crop protection products and genetic resistances and thus the future of potato cultivation.
