Mexico: Producers ask the government to apply tariffs on American potatoes

The national leader of the paperos, Gildardo González Saldívar, affirmed that there would be no shortage of food in the country

Los Mochis, Sinaloa. If  tariffs were applied  to American potatoes,  Mexico  would not suffer shortages because the  harvests are just beginning  and expectations are good, they will exceed 2 million tons, therefore, producers presented a proposal to the Federal Government to tax the import of the tuber, declared Gildardo González Saldívar.

The president of the National Confederation of Potato Producers stated that they support the defense of President Claudia Sheinbaum against the threats of the United States to apply tariffs on Mexican exports because they achieved a pause, but they do not know what may happen in the first days of March, when the deadline set by the foreign government expires.

President of the National Confederation of Potato Producers, Gildardo González Saldívar

“There would be no shortage of potatoes as food since in 2025 we have an overproduction, but regardless of the overproduction, normally within the 22 states where we have potatoes produced on a daily basis, what I mean by that is that every day there is a fresh potato harvest in our country,” he said.

He recalled that in 2018,  Mexico  applied tariffs to potato imports from the  United States  that were delivered to the border area for a period of 40 days, and that allowed for negotiations between the governments and the same thing that can happen now so as not to affect  trade  between the two countries.

The Conpapa leader  said  that they have had difficulties due to the water shortage, but despite this there will be a  sufficient harvest  for the annual demand of the population, and this shows that they do not need imports of American food, in addition to the fact that the quality in  Mexico  is superior to that of that country.

He explained that the situation in the country is critical due to the effects of  climate change , as there have been two years of  drought , but the coordination between the authorities, the irrigation modules and the users has been decisive in bringing forward the crops that were established, which were those with the lowest water demand.
