This fact not only represents an opportunity to improve local production, but also reflects a commitment to practices that respect the environment and promote biodiversity.
Omar Fernández Adán, an experienced producer at the 17 de Mayo Credit and Services Cooperative (CCS), says that thanks to assistance in agroecological practices, farmers have been able to implement techniques that optimize the use of natural resources, improving soil quality and increasing crop resistance to pests and diseases. However, he adds that this harvest has not been fruitful in this period due to several factors, both objective and subjective, highlighting the climatic characteristics that did not support the cultivation process from the beginning.
Land preparation using animal traction has been fundamental in this context. This traditional method, which uses animals such as horses and oxen, allows the land to be tilled in a more efficient and less invasive way than mechanized methods. This practice not only reduces soil compaction, but also favors the incorporation of organic matter, which in turn improves soil fertility.
The process of harvesting organic potatoes in the Senate People’s Council began at the end of January. Although not all expectations have been met, an organized and staggered sale is expected in priority education and health centers, as well as in the population, depending on the harvest and the places selected for marketing.
