Países Bajos: Export of consumer potatoes stagnates, especially less sales in Europe
From the 2024 harvest up to and including last December, 357,400 tons of consumption potatoes were sold from the Netherlands to foreign destinations. That is 14 percent less than last year over the same period.
elgium, Germany and France in particular have been buying fewer Dutch consumption potatoes this export season than in the previous two years. Last year, Belgium bought 219,309 tonnes of potatoes from the 2023 harvest up to and including December, this year that is almost 38,000 tonnes less. Towards Germany with 21,037 tonnes and France with 28,027 tonnes, the export volumes are respectively 17,500 tonnes and 5,500 tonnes lower than last year.
The smaller export volumes to European destinations are an indication that the processing industry in surrounding countries has less need for potatoes from the Netherlands, due to the good yields in Germany and France in particular. Outside the European Union, it is noticeable that the United Kingdom has purchased 10,000 tonnes more potatoes from the Netherlands this year, which is over 6,000 tonnes.
Outside Europe, more consumption potatoes were exported to African countries. They bought almost 60,000 tons of potatoes from harvest 2024 up to and including December, which means an increase of more than 9,000 tons. Senegal is the largest buyer with 30,950 tons.
To America there is a slight decrease in exports, from 2,000 tons to 32,895 tons of potatoes. The main American destinations are Trinidad and Tobago with 7,095 tons, Guyana with 5,540 tons, the Dominican Republic with 4,708 tons and Jamaica with 4,347 tons.
