Uganda: Agronomists breed quality potato seed
Dr Abel Arinaitwe a researcher at Kachwekano Zonal Research and Development institute (KAZARDI) says they have worked on a harmonised policy to provide high quality potato seed movement in the region.
The Irish potato is said to be one of the eight main food crops in the world. It is known to have originated in South America where it has been under cultivaton for nearly 2,000 years
Potato farming in the East African region plays a crucial role in the food sector and income security. However the yields still remain below the global average of 17 tonnes per hectare for two decades now.
