China: Fresh onion harvest blocked and onion prices rebound in China
The onions in stock from Gansu, Northeast, and other regions are entering the finishing stage, and the leftover product is very small.
The new onions produced in Yunnan are affected by the rainy weather and the shipment is not smooth. The price of onions in the production areas continues to improve.
At this stage, the remaining inventory of old onions in China’s domestic production areas is not large, they are mainly concentrated in the Gansu and Heilongjiang production areas. The trade of onions in Gansu is different. The trading of red onion from Gaotai, Zhangye basically ended on April 6. The quality of leftover yellow onions is inconsistent, and onions of different quality have very different prices. The price of fine products has risen to 1.30 yuan/kg, while that of lower quality is 0.70 yuan/kg. There is no shortage of low-price onions. The old onions are expected to be finished in mid-April, and the new onions have begun to be transplanted.
The domestic onion is basically supplied from Yunnan production areas at the moment. The shipment from Xichang, Sichuan, and Dayi is very small. Onions from Nanyang, Henan are expected to launch at the end of April. Due to the shortage of onions, the market situation has been good recently. It is expected that in the short term, onion prices will still rise. However, affected by the pandemic, weather and other uncertainties, the market still requires close attention.
