Peru: With a significant investment, increased production of Peruvian potato varieties is being promoted in Huancavelica

Agroideas promotes the productive development of 22 farming families in Tayacaja through the implementation of new technologies and the provision of technical assistance, thus strengthening their capacities in the agricultural sector.

The Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (MIDAGRI), through Agroideas, is supporting the implementation of a business plan valued at more than S/ 446,000, with the purpose of strengthening the production of Peruvian potatoes in the Huancavelica region.

The initiative will directly benefit the New Generation Association of Agro-industrial Producers and Multiple Services of Huayarqui, located in the province of Tayacaja, which expects to increase its production from 281 to 429 tons. This increase will allow them to improve their production capacity and generate greater economic income.

According to Jorge Amaya, executive director of Agroideas, this achievement is due to access to the Technology Adoption incentive. This program includes the provision of fertilizers, motorized sprayers, and specialized technical advice for a period of three years.

According to Amaya, this type of support promotes significant improvements in the productivity and efficiency of agricultural organizations. Furthermore, it contributes to generating higher incomes for farming families. In this particular case, the aim is to boost the production of Peruvian potatoes, a product with strong market demand.

Amaya also indicated that other agricultural associations in the country can access the incentives and services offered by Agroideas to improve their production skills and better integrate into the market. She stated that the organization has worked with more than 80 production chains nationwide, fostering the development of thousands of groups. This has resulted not only in increased production but also in a visible improvement in the quality of life for producers, thanks to close collaboration between the government and the sector’s associations.

Promoting potato production

Potatoes rank fifth among the production chains with the highest number of business plans financed by Agroideas. To date, 154 plans have been implemented nationwide, benefiting more than 4,800 families of small and medium-sized farmers.

These initiatives have represented a cumulative investment of S/ 68.5 million in various regions of Peru, including Cajamarca, Junín, Puno, Apurímac, Ayacucho, Huánuco, and Huancavelica. This consolidates the potato as a key crop for national agricultural development.
