Argentina (Traslasierra): Assessment after the frosts: “Some lost almost their entire potato harvest”

The intense frosts recorded in recent days caused serious damage to potato crops in the Traslasierra region, in the province of Córdoba.

Producers from towns like Los Cerrillos and Candelaria say that a large part of the plantations were destroyed by the low temperatures.

One of the most impactful testimonies was that of Carlos Cataldo, who described the difficult situation the sector is going through after the arrival of the extreme cold.

“The lots were practically all sold off. The cold burned the entire plant,” the producer told Radio Explosiva.

He explained that some crops were partially saved because they were at a more advanced stage of development. However, other plots that were only 60 to 70 days old were lost, causing significant economic losses for the families who depend on this activity.

Cataldo also reflected on the strong emotional connection that exists with agricultural production and the impact of losing months of work in just a few hours.

“We suffer a lot when something happens to the potato. For us, it is a living being,” he said.

The situation is generating concern not only because of the losses in the fields, but also because of the economic and labor consequences it could bring to the entire Traslasierra region, where potato production represents an important source of employment and commercial activity.
