Mexico (Sinaloa): Potato producers anticipate a decrease in the area dedicated to cultivation due to the effects of the crisis

Potato farmers in northern Sinaloa are considering reducing the area dedicated to crops once again next season, due to the impact of high temperatures and the spread of diseases.

Jorge Benjamín López Rosas, president of the Los Mochis Potato Producers Association, expressed his concern about the challenges farmers faced this year. Despite planting nearly 16,000 hectares, low yields and serious health problems in the crops have raised alarms in the sector.

**The impact of extreme heat on potato production**

Weather conditions, especially the intense heat waves, played a crucial role in the decline in production. López Rosas emphasized that the weather was unfavorable for farmers, as the high temperatures negatively impacted plant development and fostered the proliferation of diseases and pests.

Among the most significant problems were the appearance of fungi, *Fusarium* infections, pests such as moths and insects, and other challenges that weakened the crops in their final stage.

Another worrying factor was the direct impact on potato size. According to the leader, the lack of large tubers represents a significant decrease in yields and, consequently, in the producers’ income.

**Challenges in meeting business commitments**

López Rosas acknowledged that the low production had direct implications for the trade agreements established by the farmers. Although some managed to partially fulfill their contracts, in many cases it was difficult to meet demand due to the shortages.

Looking ahead to the next agricultural cycle, the president emphasized the need to implement more robust preventative management strategies. This will include the use of improved seeds and more effective phytosanitary treatments to minimize disease risks and optimize yields under adverse conditions.

The agricultural sector of Los Mochis is at a crossroads, but with a focus on innovation and prevention it seeks to overcome these adversities in the immediate future.
