Honduras: They are promoting a law to boost the cultivation and marketing of potatoes.
The proposal aims to ensure the sustainability of this agricultural sector, essential for thousands of farming families in the departments of Intibucá, La Paz and Ocotepeque, which represent the main production hub in the country.
Congressman Rumy Bueso, representing Intibucá, presented a bill to the National Congress aimed at promoting the comprehensive development of potato cultivation, processing, and marketing in Honduras.
This proposal’s main objective is to guarantee the sustainability of an agricultural sector crucial to thousands of farming families, especially in the departments of Intibucá, La Paz and Ocotepeque, which concentrate most of the national production of the tuber.

Currently, it is estimated that Honduras imports around 84 containers of certified potato seeds annually, which generates high costs for local producers.
Innovative programs, such as the one implemented at the Santa Catarina Experimental Station in La Esperanza, seek to reduce these imports by up to 75% and increase the productive value of Honduran crops by 25%.
The initiative led by Bueso also proposes the creation of a financial fund to support small and medium-sized producers. Furthermore, it would promote the development of more equitable marketing chains to ensure that farmers obtain more favorable prices in both the national and international markets. Within this framework, the initiative aims to strengthen the National Potato Supply Chain, which recently established import quotas for certified seeds for the 2025-2026 agricultural cycle.
The congressman emphasized that this project responds to the urgent needs of producers, who face serious difficulties in competing with imports and require official support to ensure the country’s food security.
If approved, this law would become a milestone in consolidating the potato as a strategic crop for Honduras, contributing to the generation of rural employment, the stimulation of the local economy and the strengthening of food sovereignty.
Furthermore, it would open up new opportunities for diversification of the agro-industrial sector, including potential exports and the development of innovative derivative products.
In this way, the National Congress has a great opportunity to transform an essential agricultural segment and mark a historic advance in favor of the development of potato-producing communities in the country.
