Mexico (Sinaloa): Producers prepare potato harvest for end of January
They could begin as early as January 20, depending on weather conditions and crop development, reported Jorge Benjamín López Rosas.
The president of the Specialized Potato Section in Ahome indicated that for the current season, yields similar to those of last year are expected, estimated at 35 tons per hectare, which generates favorable expectations in terms of profitability for the sector.
He indicated that, although current potato market prices are not favorable, they are confident that marketing will be profitable, due to the high quality of the product and the low availability of refrigerated potatoes, which is currently minimal.
The agricultural economy and employment are recovering:
The leader highlighted that the start of the harvest significantly revitalizes the regional economy, generating around 7,000 direct jobs during the season. The workforce comes mostly from the Sierra de Chihuahua, and its workers have already begun arriving in the region.
It is worth noting that during the current agricultural cycle, approximately 15,450 hectares of potatoes were planted in the northern region of Sinaloa, which consolidates this area as one of the main producers nationwide.
