Mexico: Producers warn of risks from imported potatoes
Domestic potato production faces a new challenge with imports from the US, a situation that not only impacts competition in the domestic market, but also raises phytosanitary concerns for Mexican producers.
Eduardo Pedroza, president of the Potato Product System, expressed that the entry of foreign potatoes generates uncertainty in a key sector of national horticulture, which depends both on plant health and fair marketing conditions.
He warned that, although no serious problems have been detected so far, the authorities and the sector are constantly reviewing shipments entering the country.

The leader pointed out that, in addition to the health aspect, irregularities have been identified in the marketing protocols, among them, he highlighted that imported potatoes do not always comply with the established standard, such as the presentation in 9-pound bags, since in some cases the product is arriving in bulk, which represents a non-compliance that affects fairness in the market.
He commented that the lack of adherence to the rules by importers can translate into unequal competition and additional risks to the health of national crops.
Looking ahead to the next agricultural cycle, Pedroza expressed a message of cautious optimism. He stated his confidence that conditions would be favorable, given the availability of good quality water for production, and expressed his expectation that the market would respond positively.
