Nicaragua: Potato growers face low prices despite the start of the harvest in Estelí
A local producer said that he is currently paying 700 cordobas per quintal of potatoes in the field.
The irrigated potato crop has begun to leave the Miraflor area for the Alfredo Lazo market in Estelí, but producers face a difficult economic reality: field prices are the lowest recorded in recent years, according to some farmers.
Ariel Irías, a local producer, said that the price currently being paid is only 700 córdobas per quintal in the field, a price that doesn’t cover production costs.
Meanwhile, in local markets, potatoes sell for between 18 and 20 córdobas per pound, leaving a gap between what the producer receives and the final price for the consumer.
Irías said it’s worrying because production costs aren’t going down, but the price they pay is, which affects the economy of many farming families who depend on this crop.
