Polonia: The Ministry of Agriculture has caved in. There will be facilities for potato growers
A serious potato disease has been keeping many farmers awake at night for years. Growers had to meet strict regulations that made it difficult to export vegetables outside the country.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development decided to make changes that would make individual activities much easier.
What is potato ring rot?
A serious disease caused by the bacterium Clavibacter michiganensis ssp. Sepedonicus is caused by infected grains and unsanitized tools and machines . It is considered a serious quarantine disease, among the duties of farmers is its systematic control. It develops most readily at temperatures from 20 to 23 degrees Celsius during droughts , which, as we know, are happening more and more often.
The good news is that the bacteria will most likely not survive Polish winters for some time yet . Despite this, it can survive on, among other things, stored seed potatoes, as well as on the aforementioned tools and machines.
The disease can be asymptomatic for several years, with visible symptoms including chlorosis and leaf deformation . Previously, it was detected only in laboratories, which required farmers to conduct annual monitoring of health and a number of restrictions. Some rules will change .

Potato Ring Bacteriosis in Poland
The detection of this disease on a potato plantation in Poland results in the necessity of liquidating the plantation, a ban on spreading potatoes within the country, and often even the disposal of potatoes in possession . If the producer wants to sell his products abroad, he has to subject them to special phytosanitary tests. As it turns out, we were the only member state of the European Union with such large restrictions , although the level of detection of bacteria was similar to that in other countries.
This was combated by Deputy Minister of Agriculture Michał Kołodziejczak , who announced in May 2024 that he had taken steps to remove the restrictions.
Last week I submitted a letter to EU Commissioner Stella Kyriakides, along with all the documentation, requesting that the procedure for lifting restrictions on the export of Polish potatoes be accelerated - said Michał Kołodziejczak.
The Deputy Minister also pointed out that currently in Poland the level of infection of potatoes with ring rot is the lowest in 20 years . Now the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has taken further actions aimed at simplifying the plantation of this vegetable for farmers. Many rules have changed significantly .
