Uruguay: High temperatures affect the quality of potatoes at the UAM
Potato production in the wholesale market is facing quality problems due to high temperatures and the arrival of recently harvested batches that have not yet completed their maturation
This is indicated by the latest report from the Metropolitan Agri-Food Unit (UAM), which warns that these factors are generating tubers with fragile skin, known as "pelones". Despite these difficulties, potato prices have remained stable in recent days.
According to the report, washed white potatoes are sold at between 30 and 48 pesos per kilogram in the wholesale market, while washed pink potatoes have a price that varies between 25 and 54 pesos per kilogram. These differences in value depend on the quality and size of the tubers, with those with the best presentation and largest size fetching the highest prices.
High temperatures have affected the development of the crop, causing the most recent batches to not arrive with the expected consistency. The fragile skin of the tubers makes their handling and storage difficult, which may affect the supply of the product in the coming days.
