Países Bajos: Industry processes record amount of imported potatoes
Dutch potato processors processed a record amount of potatoes from abroad in December. The supply of Dutch potatoes to the factories was smaller than in previous years.

utch factories significantly increased production in the last month of last year. A total of 343,500 tons of potatoes were processed, according to figures from the Association for the Potato Processing Industry (Vavi). Despite the holidays, this is a similar amount to October, the month in which most potatoes are normally processed.
From abroad, the factories imported 176,500 tons of potatoes. That is 10,000 tons more than the previous monthly record that was set in July 2024 with an import of 166,400 tons. The share in total processing rose to 51.4 percent in December.
At the start of the season, there are often months in which more than half of the potatoes come from abroad, but for December this is remarkable. In December 2021, the share of imported potatoes in total processing was the largest at 47.8 percent.

In Germany, the cultivation of French fries potatoes is increasing considerably and these potatoes are finding their way to Dutch factories. Belgian factories are also increasingly being supplied with German potatoes.
The processing of Dutch potatoes in December amounts to 167,000 tons. That is the smallest amount in the last month of the year in more than ten years.
